Moana 2 Christian Movie Review
(2024)After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana journeys alongside Maui and a new crew to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she's ever faced.
This sequel appears to stay in the family-adventure range for threat and language, but it also leans into spiritual ideas about ancestors, sacred titles, and demigods. For many Christian families, the main discernment question will be worldview rather than surface content.

Moana 2 Christian Movie Review (2024)
Guidance: Talk Together
This sequel appears to stay in the family-adventure range for threat and language, but it also leans into spiritual ideas about ancestors, sacred titles, and demigods. For many Christian families, the main discernment question will be worldview rather than surface content.
Why This Guidance Level
The content concerns look fairly mild on the surface, with family-film peril and light comic banter, but the spiritual framework is more significant. Ancestors are invoked positively, a ceremonial drinking ritual is tied to spiritual connection, and the story openly uses gods and a demigod as part of its world. That combination makes this less about objectionable content and more about thoughtful worldview conversation.
Faith & Worldview Perspective
The film seems to celebrate courage, service, leadership, family affection, and using gifts for the good of others. At the same time, it presents spiritual meaning through ancestors, sacred ritual, and a mythic world of gods and demigods. A Christian parent may want to discuss the difference between honoring family history and seeking spiritual guidance or power outside the Lord.
Truths Reflected
- Leadership is shown as service to a people, not just personal glory.
- The story values courage, perseverance, and connection with community.
Tensions to Discuss
- The film treats ancestors and ritual as spiritually meaningful in ways that can blur into guidance outside God.
- The presence of gods and a demigod normalizes a polytheistic framework that does not fit a biblical view of God.
Content & Discernment Markers
Occult & Spiritual Content
- Spiritual themes are central. Moana says, “This is the place of our ancestors,” and connects that place with learning who her people are. The story also speaks positively about a demigod, including the line, “she’s besties with a demigod!” For Christian families, this matters because the film’s spiritual world is not just decorative; it helps shape identity and mission.
- A formal ceremony gives Moana a sacred title: “A sacred title, more than a chief, a Tautai.” The scene includes, “Tonight, we drink from our ancestors’ bowl… To connect to our past, our present, and…” This may be worth discussing because it presents ritual and ancestral connection as spiritually meaningful.
Sexuality & Relationships
- No sexual material stands out in the available dialogue. Relationships appear focused on family bonds, teamwork, and community.
Identity Themes
- Identity is framed around calling, heritage, and communal responsibility, with lyrics like “To who we’re meant to be” and dialogue about continuing the work of earlier navigators. This can open good conversation about finding identity in family history and gifts, while also comparing that with identity rooted first in God.
Violence & Intensity
- Threat is present but sounds in line with a fantasy family adventure. Maui is warned, “If you try to reconnect the people of the ocean, he will destroy you. And then he’ll destroy her too.” The danger seems tied to a god-level antagonist and the risk of a larger quest.
- The tone includes peril and tension around rules, conflict, and possible destruction, but the film does not suggest graphic violence. Younger children may still notice the threat language.
Language & Humour
- Language appears mild and mostly playful. There are light put-downs and comic phrases such as “goofy little chicken,” “Yeah, right,” and “super chiseled demigod.” The humor is teasing rather than coarse.
Other Content Notes
- The story strongly emphasizes exploration and reconnecting scattered peoples, with lines like “There’s gotta be other people out here” and “There are other people out there.” This is a hopeful theme, though it is tied to the film’s spiritual and mythic framework.
Notable Moments
- Demigod reference: A song lyric celebrates Moana’s friendship with Maui in explicitly mythic terms.
“And she’s besties with a demigod!”
- Ancestor place: Moana identifies a location as spiritually and historically important to her people.
“This is the place of our ancestors.”
- Threat from Nalo: A warning raises the stakes of the quest and frames the antagonist as destructive.
“If you try to reconnect the people of the ocean, he will destroy you. And then he’ll destroy her too.”
- Sacred ceremony: A title-bestowing scene uses ceremonial language tied to ancestors and connection across time.
“Tonight, we drink from our ancestors’ bowl, as Tautai Vasa once did, to bestow this title on you.”
Discussion Prompts
- Where guidance comes from: The movie talks about ancestors, sacred titles, and spiritual connection. How is that different from asking God for wisdom and direction?
- Biblical guidance: Scripture teaches believers to seek wisdom from the Lord rather than spiritual guidance from other sources.
- Scripture: James 1:5, Deuteronomy 18:10-12, Psalm 119:105
- Identity and calling: The story talks about being “who we’re meant to be.” What do you think shapes a person’s identity most deeply?
- Biblical guidance: The Bible teaches that our deepest identity is found in belonging to God and being made in His image.
- Scripture: Genesis 1:27, Ephesians 2:10, 1 Peter 2:9
- Courage for others: Moana seems willing to take risks for her people. What is the difference between brave service and reckless self-reliance?
- Biblical guidance: Biblical courage acts for the good of others while depending on God’s strength, not just personal determination.
- Scripture: Joshua 1:9, Philippians 2:3-4, Proverbs 3:5-6
- Mythic stories and truth: The movie includes gods and a demigod. How can we enjoy a fantasy story while still remembering what is true about the one real God?
- Biblical guidance: Christians can recognize imagination in stories while holding firmly to the truth that there is one God alone.
- Scripture: Isaiah 45:5, Exodus 20:3, Acts 17:24-25
